Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Selection But McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out because of injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is poised to cover for the captain if the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
