Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Accusations of Lying Lawmakers

James Comey court appearance
He has stated his innocence about the charges

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the case terminated for several reasons including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the court they planned to submit various petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the legal action was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the legal matter.

James Comey's proceedings was first managed by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional rival - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration dismissed.

After listening to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors claim Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he deceived the upper house by stating he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

In a video Mr Comey published to his Instagram after he was accused, he said he was innocent and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have understood for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey came after the former president published on social media calling for his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and other people.
